The United States carried out a strike in Somalia that killed roughly 30 al-Shabaab fighters, US Africa Command stated in a press release Saturday.
US forces on Friday “conducted a collective self-defense strike” in assist of Somalia National Army forces who have been “engaged in heavy fighting following a complex, extended, intense attack by more than 100 al-Shabaab fighters,” the assertion stated, referring to the fear group linked to al Qaeda.
There have been no US army current on the bottom when the airstrike occurred, a US protection official stated.
The strike occurred about 260 kilometers northeast of the Somalian capital of Mogadishu, close to Galcad. US Africa Command assessed that no civilians have been injured or killed as a result of distant location.
The US has offered ongoing assist to the Somali authorities since President Joe Biden permitted a Pentagon request to redeploy US troops to the realm in an try and counter the terrorist group in May 2022. The approval to ship fewer than 500 troops was a reversal of former President Donald Trump’s choice to withdraw all US troops from the nation in 2020.
“Somalia remains central to stability and security in all of East Africa. U.S. Africa Command’s forces will continue training, advising, and equipping partner forces to help give them the tools they need to defeat al-Shabaab, the largest and most deadly al-Qaeda network in the world,” the US army stated in Saturday’s assertion.
In current months, US forces have performed quite a few strikes within the area which have resulted in dozens of al-Shabaab casualties.
In October, a US strike killed two al-Shabaab members about 218 kilometers north-northwest of Mogadishu. A subsequent November strike killed 17 al-Shabaab fighters roughly 285 kilometers northeast of Mogadishu. And in late December, one other US strike killed six al-Shabaab militants close to town of Cadale, which is about 150 miles northeast of the capital.
