The Golden Globes returned to the air Tuesday with a crimson carpet flush with celebrities and comic Jerrod Carmichael as emcee, because the beleaguered award present sought to rekindle its pre-pandemic and pre-scandal glamour.
Carmichael kicked off the eightieth Golden Globes from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with little of the fanfare that normally opens such glitzy ceremonies, diving straight into the problems that drove the Globes off the air and led a lot of the leisure trade to boycott the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He opened by asking the gang to “be a little quiet here.
“Welcome to the eightieth annual Golden Globe awards. I’m your host Jerrod Carmichael,” said the comedian, who won an Emmy last year for his HBO special “Rothaniel.” “And I’ll inform you why I’m right here. I’m right here as a result of I’m Black.
“I won’t say they were a racist organization,” he continued earlier than sitting on the stage. “But they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So do with that information what you will.”
Carmichael mentioned he declined to satisfy with HFPA president Helen Hoehne forward of internet hosting. Instead, he mentioned he took the job for the cash, and to honor the movie and TV trade.
