The household of the 6-year-old boy who shot and wounded his trainer earlier this month mentioned that their son suffers from an “acute disability,” and that the gun he used to shoot the educator was “secured.”
In the primary public feedback made for the reason that January incident, which shocked the the town of Newport News, Virginia, the household expressed sympathy for the trainer in a press release launched by their lawyer.
“Our heart goes out to our son’s teacher and we pray for her healing in the aftermath of such an unimaginable tragedy as she selflessly served our son and the children in the school,” learn the assertion. “She has worked diligently and compassionately to support our family as we sought the best education and learning environment for our son.”
The first-grade trainer at Richneck Elementary School had beforehand been recognized as 25-year-old Abigail Zwerner. She was launched from Riverside Regional Medical Center earlier this week, in response to a press release Thursday afternoon from hospital officers.

The household mentioned that that they had all the time been dedicated to “responsible gun ownership and keeping firearms out of the reach of children.”

It is unclear how the kid accessed the 9mm handgun he used to shoot his trainer within the chest throughout class that day. Police described the taking pictures as “intentional,” and say the weapon used had been legally bought by the kid’s mom. The household says they’ve been cooperating with native and federal legislation enforcement to know how the incident occurred.
The assertion additionally mentioned that the kid was underneath a “care plan” on the college, which included the attendance of one of many dad and mom at school with him day by day, and that the week of the taking pictures had been the primary that they had not been at school with their son.
