Having gained 11 of 13 matches on the Grand Slam since enjoying her first Grand Slam as a mom at Roland-Garros this spring, the 28-year-old Ukrainian continues to climb.
She began the season effectively outdoors the Top 200 and is now firmly contained in the Top-30 and searching like a Top-10 participant. Credit a brand new coach, and newfound aggressiveness.
Svitolina says she all the time wished to shed her popularity as a defensive-minded participant, and since she got here again from her hiatus, she has carried out simply that.
“I think different things changed,” she mentioned on Thursday after edging previous Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. “I have this experience from all the years that I played on tour. I was always looking to improve my serve, to improve the power on my shots, to strike the ball more cleaner, some technical things on my forehand.”
When Svitolina began her comeback after giving start to her child lady Skai, she had time to work on components of her sport that had beforehand uncared for. She additionally made the sensible choice to work with coach Raemon Sluiter, who has made a big impression on her.
“I had three months starting from January until my first match where we were just working on my game,” She mentioned. “Also, fresh opinion. Raemon is a great coach. He explains very easy. Almost feels like he’s not doing anything, but this is like in a way really natural and very good. I was just analyzing, trying to think what he really brought into my game. This is really natural because we talk about the game, we try to analyze few things here and there.
After years of relying on her world-class defense and consistency, Svitolina has added an aggressive element to her game, and it’s helping her have success at the Slams.
“In the end it really comes naturally,” she mentioned. “So I’m happy that there is improvement. I always have really high standard of how I see my game, how I want to play. Sometimes maybe it’s not playing on my head because I’m too hard on myself and getting down.
“Now I’m happy with the balance that I have. These matches, like today, didn’t play well but I fought and got the win.”
Svitolina will face both Jessica Pegula or Patricia Maria Tig within the third spherical on Saturday. She has reached the quarterfinas (2021) or higher (semifinals 2021) in her final two appearances in New York and owns a 21-9 lifetime report in Flushing Meadows.
