WPL 2023: Smriti Mandhana named RCB captain | Cricket News – Act Daily News

NEW DELHI: India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was expectedly named as captain by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL).
RCB had purchased Smriti for Rs 3.40 crore within the latest public sale held in Mumbai. It was the very best worth for a participant within the WPL public sale.

On asserting Mandhana because the captain, RCB chairman Prathmesh Mishra mentioned: “Smriti is central to our play bold philosophy and cricketing plans. We have handed her the leadership role, and we are confident that Smriti will lead RCB into greater heights.”
On her function because the RCB girls’s crew captain, Mandhana mentioned: “It is such a great feeling to see Virat and Faf speak so much about leading RCB and I would like to thank RCB management for giving me this amazing opportunity.

<p>RCB was on a spending spree in the inaugural WPL auction, having exhausted Rs 7.10 crore out of Rs 12-crore purse on four players.</p>

<p>Smriti Mandhana stole the thunder as RCB pipped Mumbai Indians in a bidding war to buy the India vice-captain for Rs 3.40 crore.</p>

<p>RCB got New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine dirt cheap at a base price of Rs 50 lakh.</p>

<p>Star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry received a cool Rs 1.70 crore winning bid from RCB.</p>

<p>Right-arm pacer Renuka Singh (Rs 1.50 crore) is a significant Indian addition to RCB’s star-studded roster.</p>

<p>RCB bought young and emerging talented wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh for Rs 1.90 crore.</p>

<p>In the later stages of the accelerated auction, RCB bought Disha Kasat, Indrani Roy, Shreyanka Patil and Asha Shobana for Rs 10 lakh each.</p>

<p>RCB paid Rs 35 lakh to secure the services of batting all-rounder Kanika Ahuja.</p>

<p>England captain Heather Knight was secured by RCB for Rs 40 lakh, improving their already powerful squad.</p>

<p>South African all-rounder Dane Van Niekerk, who has not played international cricket since September 2021, was bought for her base price of Rs 30 lakh.</p>

<p>RCB bought left-arm bowler Preeti Bose for Rs 30 lakh. Pacer Komal Zanzad was sold for Rs 25 lakh.</p>

<p>Poonam Khemnar and Sahana Pawar raked in Rs 10 lakh each.</p>

<p>Experienced Aussie pacer Megan Schutt who went unsold in the initial round, was bought by RCB for Rs 40 lakh in the final stages of the auction.</p>

Mandhana has also been a sought-after player on the T20 circuit, making appearances for Brisbane Heat, Sydney Thunder (Women’s BBL), Western Storm (Kia Super League) and Southern Brave (The Hundred).
She has captained India in 11 T20Is, of which they have won six and lost five games. She was also skipper of Trailblazers at the Women’s T20 Challenge – the WPL’s precursor – across all four seasons it was held while leading the team to the title in 2020.
The decorated player recently won the ICC Women Cricketer Of The Year for scoring 855 runs in 22 matches in 2021.
The WPL begins on March 4, with Gujarat Giants taking on Mumbai Indians. RCB’s opener is against Delhi Capitals on March 5.
