MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is seeking to appoint former Mumbai captain and chief selector Milind Rege as its advisor for “cricketing matters”.
The 74-year-old’s function, although, can be impartial to that of the MCA’s newly-appointed Cricket Improvement Committee, which is headed by former India opener Lalchand Rajput, and contains Sahil Kukreja and Preeti Dimri as its members.
Rege, an off-spinning all-rounder in his time, performed 52 first-class video games, during which he picked 126 wickets at a median of 29.23, apart from scoring 1532 runs at a median of 23.56. He was part of the staff’s six Ranji Trophy triumphs. He was additionally a MCA selector for 35 years, and was part of the Mumbai choice committee which picked a teenaged Sachin Tendulkar first.
In an e mail (TOI has a duplicate) to the members of the Apex Council on Tuesday, MCA secretaries Ajinkya Naik and Deepak Patil sought their opinion on Rege’s appointment.
“Dear Apex Council members, with the appointment of the CIC, we have taken the first step towards preparing for the upcoming cricketing season. The Rajput-led committee will definitely strive towards improving our on-ground performances. Along with the CIC, it is important to utilise the experience of former Mumbai cricketers. There are many Mumbai greats who are willing to spare their time and share their knowledge for the betterment of Mumbai cricket,” wrote the secretaries.
The e mail talked about that Rege has “graciously” agreed to MCA president Amol Kale’s request to assist out the affiliation on cricketing issues. The Apex members have been requested to answer the proposed appointment by April 19.
“Hon’ble president sir has mentioned with Rege and requested him to share his wealth of expertise in cricketing issues. Rege, who has served MCA for a few years in numerous capacities, has graciously accepted president sir’s proposal to be appointed as an advisor to MCA for cricketing issues on honorary foundation. The Apex Council will certainly profit from the expertise of Rege. We want to know your ideas on the mentioned appointment. Kindly share your recommendations, if any, relating to the proposed appointment on or earlier than nineteenth April 2023,” the e-mail talked about.
