When a pig is trapped in a separate enclosure from its group, different pigs come to its help, suggesting they might have empathy for one another.
Researchers have beforehand discovered that home pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) change into harassed once they see others of their type in a fearful state. Liza Moscovice on the Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology in Dummerstorf, Germany, and her colleagues needed to check whether or not the animals would take motion to alleviate one another’s misery.
