A feminine Cuvier’s beaked whale has been noticed swimming round her lifeless calf, touching her head towards his and making an attempt to elevate his physique in an obvious present of grief. This is the primary time such grieving behaviour has been documented in a beaked whale.
The pair was noticed by a tour group on board a whale-watching boat 21 kilometres off the coast of Bermeo within the Bay of Biscay within the north of Spain.
