United Parcel Service introduced Tuesday that it had reached a tentative deal on a five-year contract with the union representing greater than 325,000 of its U.S. employees, a key step in averting a possible strike when the present settlement expires on Aug. 1.
“Together we reached a win-win-win agreement on the issues that are important to Teamsters leadership, our employees and to UPS and our customers,” Carol Tomé, the corporate’s chief government, mentioned in a press release. “This agreement continues to reward UPS’s full- and part-time employees with industry-leading pay and benefits while retaining the flexibility we need to stay competitive.”
The union, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, reported in June that its UPS members had voted to authorize a strike, with 97 % of those that took half within the vote endorsing the transfer. The tentative settlement will now go earlier than the membership for ratification.
UPS handles about one-quarter of the tens of thousands and thousands of packages which are shipped day by day within the United States, and a strike may dent financial exercise, notably the e-commerce trade.
The union had cited the corporate’s robust pandemic-era efficiency, with internet adjusted revenue up greater than 70 % final 12 months from 2019, as a cause that employees deserved substantial raises.
