Brazil Supreme Court justice orders investigation into Google, Telegram executives

Brazil’s Supreme Court on Friday ordered an investigation into executives at social messaging service Telegram and Alphabet Inc’s Google who’re accountable for a marketing campaign criticising a proposed web regulation invoice.

The resolution by justice Alexandre de Moraes to open an investigation, primarily based on a request by Lower House Speaker Arthur Lira, got here after tech corporations campaigned towards the invoice on their platforms. They later eliminated the posts following orders from the Supreme Court.

Justice Moraes gave the federal police 60 days to hold out their probe and ordered authorities to determine and take testimony from all these accountable on the corporations for the “abusive campaign” towards the Bill.

In his request, Lira stated tech corporations have used “all sorts of tricks in a sordid campaign of disinformation, manipulation and intimidation, taking advantage of their hegemonic position in the market.”

The Bill would put the onus on web corporations, search engines like google and yahoo and social messaging providers to seek out and report unlawful materials, as a substitute of leaving it to the courts, and cost hefty fines for failures to take action.

Google declined to touch upon the matter, whereas Telegram didn’t reply to a request for remark.
