Welcome Bash: Djokovic Thrills in AO Return
Nine-time AO champion Novak Djokovic expects Melbourne marathon matches to abound for one easy cause: the Australian Open Dunlop ball fluffs up with use making it more durable to finish factors.
For that cause, the fourth-seeded Serbian sees this AO shaping up as a battle of attrition.
“The tennis ball has changed this year. I mean, it is different from last year,” Djokovic informed the media in Melbourne after rolling via 10 of the final 11 video games to brush Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in his AO opener. “I mean, the longer you play, the more rallies you play, the fluffier or the bigger the ball becomes, and it’s slower.”
Dunlop provides all of the tennis balls to be used through the Australian Open. Six new balls are used for the five-minute warm-up and the primary seven video games, with six new balls offered each 9 video games thereafter.
Players say the slower ball, mixed with courtroom situations, could make it a problem to punctuate factors.
“I saw that Popyrin is playing now over four hours. Ruud played over three-and-a-half hours,” Djokovic stated. “I think we are going to see more of those longer duration of matches this year than we have maybe last year.
“One of the largest causes will in all probability be the ball as a result of notably on the large courts, I do not assume the velocity of the floor has modified a lot. The exterior courts are fairly fast. The stadium courts are a bit slower. But the ball is slower. So that impacts the play.”

Reigning Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal said the official Dunlop ball is of “worse high quality” and suggests it’s harder to create topspin with the ball.
“The velocity of the courtroom I believe not massive distinction. The ball, sure,” Nadal said. “I do not know. They say is identical, however the ball is worse high quality, undoubtedly. We cannot discuss that any extra. It’s what we’ve. We must play with it.
“I think it’s a ball that don’t get the same spin as usual. After a couple of hits, the ball lose the pressure. It’s more difficult to hit with the right spin.
“But I believe it is simpler to play once you play flatter on the photographs. But I must stay with it. I believe I practiced sufficient with the ball to be prepared for it.”
