Inside a small, geodesic dome close to Iceland’s Hellisheiði geothermal energy station, water filled with carbon dioxide is being pumped a whole lot of metres down into the porous basalt. At least, I’m assured it’s: the water is so clear that the pipe appears empty after I peer by a viewing window at it.
