FOR the primary time on Earth, a managed fusion response has generated extra energy than was used to kickstart it. Reaching the milestone offers actual hope that fusion reactors can ship on the decades-long promise of plentiful, clear power that, in keeping with the Atomic Energy Commission in 1954, can be “too cheap to meter”.
With 100 years of science behind the outcome and a long time of engineering nonetheless forward, fusion can be – if we get there – maybe one of the best instance of coordinated, long-term effort by people and the best pay-off ever obtained. The engineers who assemble the primary business …
