A hazard mitigation plan ready for Maui County in 2020 mentioned that the world of West Maui — the place Lahaina is positioned — had the best annual chance for wildfires of all of the communities within the county.
The doc listed West Maui as having a “highly likely” chance, or a greater than 90 % probability, of wildfires every year on common. “This may limit the population’s ability to receive, understand and take expedient action during hazard events,” the plan states.
